CORDLESS POWER TOOLS MANUFACTURERS: HOW DISTRIBUTORS SHOULD EVALUATE A SUPPLIER

When evaluating cordless power tools manufacturers, judge four things: the battery platform, spare-parts and service support, compliance documents, and trade terms. A good sample alone proves very little.

CHOOSING CORDLESS POWER TOOLS MANUFACTURERS

Why the battery platform comes first

When you stock a cordless line, you are buying into a battery platform; every later tool and battery order follows from it. Customers’ batteries fit only the same family of tools, so a thin platform limits what you can sell them next.

What should you check on the platform?

  • Number of tool categories on one battery family and the trades they serve: automotive, construction, metalwork, or garden.
  • Available battery capacities and matching chargers.
  • Whether batteries and chargers are available separately as spare parts.
  • How long the manufacturer intends to support the current battery design.

Which questions should you ask?

  • Which catalogue tools share this battery, and which do not?
  • What new tools are planned for the platform in the next year or two?
  • If the battery design changes, how will existing customers be supported?

SPARE PARTS, SERVICE AND WARRANTY HANDLING

Find out how a failed tool gets repaired before the first one fails. Service is what customers remember long after the sale.

COMPLIANCE DOCUMENTS TO REQUEST

Ask for the compliance paperwork before you place an order, not after the goods reach customs. For cordless tools, three documents recur often:

Document Why it matters Source
UN 38.3 test summary for each battery Lithium batteries offered for transport must have passed the UN 38.3 design tests. Since 21 January 2022, battery manufacturers must make the test summary available on request. US PHMSA
EU Declaration of Conformity for CE-marked products The manufacturer carries out the conformity assessment, keeps the technical file, issues the declaration, and affixes the CE mark. European Commission
Safety test reports to IEC/EN 62841 IEC 62841 covers motor-operated hand-held electric tools, including battery tools; its Annexes K and L add requirements for Li-ion battery systems. IECEE

A CE mark is the manufacturer’s declaration, not proof that an authority has approved the product as safe. Ask for the declaration itself. For North America and other markets, ask which standards each model has been tested to and request the reports.

TRADE TERMS TO AGREE IN WRITING

Put commercial terms in writing before the first order. A reliable manufacturer will expect these questions.

  • Minimum order quantity per model and whether models can be mixed in one order.
  • Standard lead time, plus re-order and spare-parts lead times.
  • Territory: exclusive, shared, or open.
  • Price structure and how price changes are notified.
  • Marketing support: catalogues, product photos, translated manuals, and trade-show presence.
  • Packaging and labelling for your market.

HOW TO RUN THE EVALUATION

Test the tools on real customer jobs and speak with the people behind them before you commit to volume.

  • Run samples on real work in your market, not only on a bench test.
  • Meet the manufacturer face to face, at the factory or a trade fair.
  • Ask for references from distributors in other regions.
  • Start with a focused range, then expand once service has been tested in practice.

WHERE M7 FITS

M7 (Mighty Seven) is a Taiwan tool brand that sells through distributors worldwide. Its official catalogue lists cordless tools alongside pneumatic tools, torque products, impact sockets and accessories, and lighting.

  • The cordless catalogue includes an 18V Li-ion battery and charger range alongside tools for fastening, drilling, cutting, sanding, heating, cleaning, garden work, and more.
  • Its broader range lets a distributor discuss air and cordless options with one supplier.
  • For distribution in your region, request the current catalogue and the documentation listed above.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the difference between a cordless power tool manufacturer and a supplier?

A manufacturer designs and builds the tools and holds the technical files and test reports. A supplier may be the manufacturer or a trading company in between. Dealing with the manufacturer directly removes a layer between you and answers on parts, service, and documents.

What documents should a cordless power tool supplier provide?

At minimum: a UN 38.3 test summary for each lithium battery, an EU Declaration of Conformity for CE-marked products sold in Europe, and safety test reports to the standards your market requires, such as IEC/EN 62841 for electric tools.

Do I need a UN 38.3 test summary to ship cordless tool batteries?

Lithium batteries offered for transport must have passed the UN 38.3 tests, according to US PHMSA, and manufacturers must make the test summary available on request. Ask for it before shipment so your freight forwarder has it on file.

Should a distributor stock more than one battery platform?

It depends on your customers. One platform keeps stock and training simple. A second platform makes sense only if it covers trades or tools the first cannot.
